What is Google Earth (GE)?

Google Earth is a program published by Google which allows you to view high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery going down to road and street signs.

Further uses are being developed to overlay business details and GPS data. None of this describes the wonders of the program which, in may ways, are only limited by your imagination.

To enhance the basic program you can add information to refine the information annotated about a location.

The add ons consist of three basic types:

  • Place marks – a marker on the ground for each place of interest such as the tower of London or the Eiffel Tower.
  • Network links – links from Google Earth to other web based data for example a the specific page on aweb site about a specific area or feature.
  • Overlays – additional graphical information about the map section you are viewing superimposed over the Google satellite maps providing extra detail.

A full version is available for Windows version and the beta version for Mac was released on 10 January 2006.
